FirstRand Private Wealth Management has evolved from the private client management team of Ashburton (Jersey) Limted, the Group’s highly acclaimed international asset management business.
Ashburton was the inspiration of its founders, Tim Bettany and Derek Breed, who in 1982 shared a common investment philosophy that consistent returns could be obtained from the markets whilst avoiding risk and volatility. Private clients was their primary focus and such was the intimacy of their service that many clients became life long friends. Over the years, true client care remained at Ashburton’s core.
Ashburton is now an intermediary-focused, global asset management business. In order to preserve the traditional Ashburton ethos of client care forged through the years FirstRand Private Wealth Management was established, to care for Ashburton's and the FirstRand Groups international private clients, both existing and new.
FirstRand Private Wealth Management is proud of its Ashburton heritage and in particular, its reputation for genuinely putting the client first. As we extend FirstRand’s South African wealth management model into the international arena, we aspire to further enhance this reputation for exemplary client service stemming from our Ashburton roots.

Ashburton has always had a strong, loyal client base in South Africa, which is how it first became known to the FirstRand Group.
The FirstRand Group firmly believed that the philosophical beliefs behind Ashburton’s success were entirely compatible with their own.
These were the early steps of a relationship which has ultimately resulted in the establishment of FirstRand International Wealth Management Holdings Limited, the parent company of both Ashburton and FirstRand Private Wealth Management Limited as you see them today.
